Sciatica

Sciatica describes pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg, often accompanied by pins and needles, numbness, or weakness. Symptoms may be constant or intermittent and can worsen with sitting, bending, lifting, or prolonged standing. While many people use “sciatica” as a general term for leg pain, true sciatica usually involves irritation of a lumbar nerve root.

Treatment focuses on reducing nerve irritation, improving mobility, and restoring strength and tolerance to daily activities. Care may include hands-on therapy where appropriate, along with specific exercises to improve movement and build capacity through the back, hips, and legs. You’ll also receive guidance on positions and activity modification to reduce flare-ups while keeping you active. If there are signs of significant neurological deficit or other red flags, you will be referred urgently for further medical assessment.
